We seek to profile the top Chinese industries operating in Kenya, focusing on manufacturing, agribusiness, and construction firms. Information will be collected through on the ground fieldwork across Kenya and will add to knowledge, as the current understanding of Chinese activity in Kenya is relatively unknown. Implications of such research include greater understanding of industries that foreign (particularly Chinese) entities are conducting business in, more entrance of other foreign and domestic businesses into the Kenyan market, and greater transparency of industrial activity. This information is hugely relevant for government and investment knowledge and is currently a gap in the knowledge base. Industry is a significant component of growth in developing countries and such research can have profound peripheral effects.
The end product is a profile of the major Chinese companies working in Kenya. Examples of previous studies such as this can be found in the Links tab. Kyla and I are also collecting data for our respective Masters theses, which will focus on impacts of this activity on various aspects of the economy and culture.
